In the late nineteenth century--an age where spiritualism gained favor and notoriety--ghost stories involving Washington cropped up repeatedly in the popular press and lore. He began construction on his first house at Glen Eyrie. This breathtaking hotel overlooking the Rocky Mountains is famous the world over, mostly due to Stephen King's The Shining, which was dreamed up while King was staying overnight at the Stanley Hotel. The city declined because it feared maintenance costs would be too high. William Jackson Palmer built his first house at Glen Eyrie. Those locations that allow visitors by appointment have been listed by the town they are in. In addition, starting in the 1880s Queen Palmer suffered from a heart condition that forced her to stay at lower elevations. Otherwise, this list is not an invitation to trespass; it is for fun and for history. Later, William Jackson Palmer became the founder and owner of the Denver & Rio Grande Railway. This ghost is conjectured to be that of Mr. Bryans daughter, who was mentioned in various newspaper articles about her family, but is only ever mentioned as Miss Bryan, so there isnt currently any confirmation that Mary and Miss Bryan are one in the same. Spend enough time in Colorado and you'll likely hear a ghost story or two that will chill you to the bone. The large new stone castle at Glen Eyrie had sixty-seven rooms and more than twenty fireplaces.
